Top 5 Things to Do in Ishigaki, Okinawa

If you’re planning a trip to Japan’s tropical paradise Ishigaki Island you’re in for a treat. This gem in the Okinawa Prefecture is known for its crystal-clear waters, lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Visiting Ishigaki was definitely a favorite destination on my trip to Japan.

Here are five must-do activities that’ll make your visit unforgettable!

Yaima Village

Yaima Village is a beautifully preserved traditional Okinawan village. This open-air museum features restored houses, craft workshops and performances of traditional music and dance. It’s a perfect spot to learn about the island’s history and to get a glimpse of how people used to live here. Don’t miss the squirrel monkey garden!

Emerald Sea Observatory Deck

For panoramic views of Ishigaki’s stunning coastline head to the Emerald Sea Observatory Deck. Perched on a hill, this spot offers a breathtaking sight of the emerald-green waters and surrounding islands. From the deck you’ll have 360° views of Ishigaki. Even on a cloudy day it was still amazing.

If you need a break from the heat, you can get a drink from the on-site vending machine and hide from the sun under the canopy while enjoying the landscape.

Stalactite Cave

The Stalactite Cave, also known as Ishigaki Limestone Cave, is like stepping into another world. The cave is filled with incredible rock formations that have been shaped over thousands of years. The pathways are well-lit and easy to navigate and the cool air inside is a nice break from the island’s tropical heat. There is a section that lights up in beautiful colours and is decorated with fairy lights that make for a magical atmosphere.

I chose to go here on a day that it rained and I found it be the perfect rainy day activity in Ishigaki. After you’ve finished visiting the cave, take a look at the gift shop that has a huge selection of souvenirs and local delicacies.

Oganzaki Lighthouse

Located on the northern tip of the island the Oganzaki Lighthouse is a picture-perfect spot. The lighthouse itself is charming but it’s the surrounding scenery that’ll really blow you away. Think dramatic cliffs, sparkling turquoise waters and lush greenery as far as the eye can see. A bit further down you’ll find Fuchibui Rock which makes for some great pictures.

Afterwards go get some ice cream at Ishigaki Island Fruits Land (locate it on Google Maps). At first glance it might not look like much but it is a family business run by a super cute lady that sells the freshest mango ice cream I’ve ever had in my life.

Kabira Bay

No trip to Ishigaki is complete without a visit to Kabira Bay, one of Japan’s most beautiful beaches. The views from Kabira Park Observatory deck are simply stunning.

Before walking down from the deck, make sure to get a ticket for one of the glass bottom boat tours. The boat will head out to the good spots and hoover over them so you’ll be able to see a variety of coral and different types of fish. If you’re lucky you might even spot some sea turtles.
